Joel Santos was born in 1978 in Lisbon, Portugal. He holds an honors degree in Economics and a master‘s degree in Economics and Management of Science and Technology. Despite his academic background, he has dedicated the last 15 years to his greatest passion: photography.
His photographs and writings are frequently published by photography, travel and corporate magazines all over the world, having featured more than thirty covers and hundreds of articles. Among his clients are major brands, like Microsoft, IKEA, ABC Studios, Rough Guides, National Geographic Traveller, Canon, Samsung, among many others.
His work has also been shown in several individual and collective exhibitions, namely in Portugal, Poland and East Timor. His photographic work and published books are frequently featured on the main Portuguese TV channels, namely RTP, RTP ÁFRICA, SIC, SIC Notícias, SIC Radical, SIC Mulher, CMTV, TVI and Porto Canal, where he has given dozen interviews during the past years.
He is the author of seven books, namely the best-seller “FOTOgrafia: Luz, Exposição, Composição, Equipamento” (Photography: Light, Exposure, Composition, Equipment), the acclaimed “INDIA – The Color of Contrast” (coffee table book), “FOTOpad” (field guide), “FOTOcomposição” (composition), “FOTOedição” (post-processing with Lightroom and ACR) and “FOTOhdr” (HDR).
From 2007 until 2010 he was the Editor in Chief of “O Mundo da Fotografia Digital”, the Portuguese best-selling photo magazine.
He is a part of Canon Professional Network under Canon’s Ambassador Programme as a Canon Explorer.
He has won several national and international photography awards for his work, including the First Prize (2006) and Honorable Mention (2007) in the Nature of Prémio Fotojornalismo Visão/BES (World Press Photo jury and standards), and the over all prize of Travel Photographer Of The Year (2016).
As a professional photographer, he is represented by renowned image banks, namely Aurora Photos, Getty Images and Barcroft.
He was one of the aerial photography and video footage pioneers using drones in the past 5 years, which resulted in a handful of short documentaries that were featured worldwide, namely in the The Guardian, Daily Mail, The Sun, The Weather Channel, MSN, among many other media channels.
With the travel agency Papa-Léguas, he currently leads trips and photography workshops in Portugal and all over the world, combining his vast experience as a traveller with his love of communicating and teaching.
